Lunar eclipses occur at the full moon, when the Earth appears on the same line between the Sun and the Moon, the latter at the same time enters the cone of the Earth’s shadow and acquires a reddish tint.
However, the Earth also has a “partial shade”, which the Moon will go into four times during 2020. Such lunar eclipses are called penumbra. The first of the four lunar eclipses of 2020, the Russians will see on the evening of Friday, January 10. The moon will go only at the partial shade of the Earth, therefore it will not acquire a reddish tint.
So, on January 10, 2020, the most significant PENCENT Eclipse of the Moon will occur. The moon will almost completely go into the partial shade of the Earth. The moment of the largest phase of the penumbra eclipse (0.92) will come at 22:10 Moscow time. At this moment, the Moon will be located above the horizon throughout our country, that is, this eclipse can be seen from any region of Russia.
The southern edge of the moon will be only three angular minutes from the boundary of the earth’s shadow and will be noticeably darkened. In this case, the effect of the "bloody moon" should not be expected - it occurs only when the moon is completely eclipsed, when it is completely in the shadow of the Earth.
